I recommend training on the elliptical machine at your local gym. You can get up to 25 miles a day if you are gung ho, and the resistance mimics hills etc. without being in the blazing sun for hours. I did 600 miles across the heart of Kansas and eastern Colorado, in almost always 100 degree heat, and it was the toughest thing I had to deal with. Climbing the Rockies, after all that training–piece of cake. Even so, in the end, by the time I reached San Francisco, my feet were both broken (stress fractures). Id be happy to be part of your documentary if you need good literate testimony to what makes us want to do crazy stuff! Im 51 years old and write for a local paper here in rural Georgia, although I am originally a New Yorker (upstate).
If you think my blog is awesome-sauce, and wanna support a struggling blogger, please consider clicking on this bright little button below. Those that donate get their names plastered all over my supporters page in gratitude (unless you ask me not to--it's okay, I can keep a secret).
